Atari Unveils Its First Console In More Than 20 Years

Atari’s getting back into the console business with the Atari VCS.

Atari officially unveiled the console’s name this week, as well as two controller prototypes and a logo. The first controller features a joystick design reminiscent of the Atari 2600’s, while the second looks similar to a modern Xbox controller, with asymmetrical analog sticks and ABXY buttons.

Atari first teased its “retro-inspired gaming and entertainment platform,” previously known as the Ataribox, at last year’s E3. The Atari VCS represents the company’s first new console in 25 years and promises to be a “full PC experience for the TV, brining you streaming, applicatiions, social, browsing, music, and more.” When it comes to games, Atari VCS will support pre-loaded retro Atari games, as well as “current titles from a range of studios.”

“With the Atari VCS name, we know how important it is to get everything completely right and that’s why we briefly paused an imminent launch late last year,” said Atari COO of Connected Devices Michael Arzt. “It was a difficult decision with the countdown underway, but we weren’t willing to go forward with even one thing out of alignment.”

A preorder date for Atari VCS will be revealed in April. Will you be putting an order in?
